Description
28 Colliergate is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the early 19th century, with some alterations made in the late 19th century and a shopfront added in the 20th century. The building is constructed of brown brick in Flemish bond and features a timber cornice, with a pantile roof and a brick chimney stack.
The exterior has three storeys and one window front. The shopfront includes a plate glass window above a panelled riser, with a glass door that is recessed to the right. The windows on the first and second floors are 4-pane sashes, each with painted stone sills and channelled wedge lintels. The second-floor window is partially obscured by a cornice that features dentils and modillions.
Inside, there is a close string staircase that rises from the first to the second floor, characterized by stick balusters and a moulded handrail that ramps up to turned newels. The first floor retains reeded doorcases, while the front room on the second floor has a plain fireplace with a cast-iron basket grate.
