Description
No 19 North Bar Within is a mid-18th century building that stands two storeys tall with an attic, constructed of brick that has been painted on the front. It features a pantile roof with one dormer that has a bold moulded pediment and a sliding sash window. The gable ends have stone ogee moulded kneelers, and there is a moulded brick eaves cornice. On the first floor, there are two near flush frame sash windows with glazing bars. The ground floor has a shop front from the first half of the 19th century, which includes pilasters, an entablature, a panelled base, and plate glass.
Inside, the first-floor front room is adorned with fielded panelling and a dentilled cornice, along with window seats. Opposite the fireplace, there is a panel with a shouldered architrave and a fluted frieze, while the door features a fluted frieze and a dentilled entablature, suggesting these elements may be slightly later. The landing is panelled to dado level and includes a panelled window seat, with one door fitted with a contemporary spring latch. The staircase is particularly notable, designed in a pseudo-cantilevered style with an open string, no newels, a strut spiral curtail, and spiral fluted balusters typical of mid-18th century design, along with a moulded handrail and panelled dado. The first-floor rear room is wainscotted throughout with sunk panelling, except above the fireplace where it features bolection moulding; it has two doors, one with sunk panelling and the other with fine bolection panelling.
