Description
No. 78 Southgate Street is a shop and former dwelling dating from the mid-18th century, with later alterations. The building is constructed of brick with stone details, covered in roughcast on the front, and features a slate roof. It is a double-depth block with a rear wing.
The exterior consists of three storeys, with a late 19th-century shop front. The upper floors display raised and chamfered quoins that extend to full height at each corner. On the first floor, there are two tall sash windows with glazing bars arranged in a 3x4 pane configuration, while the second floor has two shorter sash windows with glazing bars in a 3x2 pane arrangement, all set in openings with projecting stone sills.
Inside, the building features boxed axial beams. The first floor includes a mid-19th-century fireplace with a tiled surround and a cast-iron grate. The attic stairs are adorned with turned balusters, transitioning from bobbon-on-vase to splat balusters, and there are three two-panel doors.
