Description
74 Southgate Street is a shop and dwelling that has been converted into a flat. It features an early 19th-century refronting of a mid-18th-century structure, with later alterations. The building is made of rendered brick and has a tile roof with a flat-roofed dormer. It is a double-depth block with additions at the rear.
The exterior consists of two storeys and an attic. The front displays a late 19th-century shop front, with strip pilasters on either side, a band at the former eaves level, and a central late 19th-century tripartite plain sash window. There is also a central 20th-century full-width dormer with a four-light metal casement.
Inside, the first-floor features a fireplace with bolection moulding, and the attic has exposed purlins. The building holds a prominent group value position within the street.
