Description
No. 76 Southgate Street is a shop and flat built in the mid-18th century, with later alterations. The building is constructed of brick with stone details, and the front is painted white, topped with a tiled roof. It has a double-depth block with later extensions at the rear.
The exterior features two storeys and an attic. The front displays a late 19th-century shop front, while the first floor has two sash windows with glazing bars arranged in a 3x4 pane configuration. These windows are set in openings with rubbed brick flat-arched heads, projecting key stones, and projecting stone sills, with a raised band above them.
Inside, the front room contains a transverse beam that has been boxed in. The first floor features a chamfered axial beam with a scroll stop and a two-panel door. There is a short run of barleytwist on urn balusters and a moulded handrail leading to the winder attic staircase. The attic includes a plank door and exposed purlins. The rear range, dating from around 1800 to 1820, has a straight-flight staircase with stick balusters and a wreathed handrail, along with exposed beams and rafters on the first floor of the rear range.
