Description

22 North Bar Within is an early 18th-century building that has undergone some alterations. It stands three storeys tall, constructed of red brick with a pantile roof. The front features two gabled dormers with sliding casements facing Hengate. There is an eaves cornice supported by four heavy corbels, and three windows on the upper floors, with dummy windows on the top floor. A band runs between the first and second floors, and the left gable end is coped with a kneeler. The ground floor has a shop front that includes three wooden Doric pilasters, a bow window with glazing bars, and a shaped bracketed cornice dating to around 1795.

The elevation facing Hengate is finished in stucco and consists of two storeys and an attic, with wooden eaves on block brackets and four windows across. It features a two-panel door and a six-panel door, both with rectangular fanlights. Inside, the building has a notable staircase similar to that in No 19, designed with a pseudo-cantilevered open string, lacking newels, a semi-spiral curtail, and spiral-twisted balusters typical of the mid-18th century. The first floor rooms contain three early 18th-century chimneypieces with simply moulded stone surrounds, and there is one in the attic that features a late 18th-century cast iron grate.
