Description
The buildings at 18 and 20 North Bar Within, Beverley, date to circa 1700. They are constructed of painted brick with a pantile roof and a parapet finished with stone coping. Lead rainwater heads and pipes are also present. The front features two near-flush frame sash windows without glazing bars, and two wooden shop fronts. A prominent, pedimented canopy shelters the doorway, supported by boldly carved consoles, with an open pediment containing rosettes. The door has glazed upper panels.
A room within the occupation of No. 20 features wainscoting throughout with bolection panelling, including two doors with three panels each. A chimneypiece with a marble surround and a double bolection architrave is also present. Behind No. 18, a staircase with a closed string, spiral twisted balusters, and a moulded handrail is notable. Above the staircase is a plaster modillioned ceiling cornice, partially obscured by modern partitions. At the foot of the stairs is a recess containing a deeply moulded bolection panel with ornamental carving, likely a reused feature from Hotham House. The buildings hold group value by virtue of their architectural and historical significance within the North Bar Within conservation area.
