Description

Nos. 268 to 274 on New Chester Road are four houses built in 1898 by architects Douglas and Minshull. The buildings are constructed of brick with a plaster first floor and feature tiled roofs. They are two storeys high and consist of four bays, with the first bay recessed by one bay and topped with a half-hipped gable. The first floors of the houses jet out over the ground floor.

The windows include 4-light leaded casements, with the ground floor windows featuring gauged-brick cambered arches. The first bay has a prominent 6-light canted bay window with two lights on the return, while the first floor has canted oriel windows on the second, third, and fourth bays. The entrances are marked by stone lintels and three-panel doors with leaded lights.

The houses also have a cross-axial stack and a projecting lateral stack that features decorative diapering, along with a gable on the return of the first bay. There is a projecting gable-end stack with diagonal flues on weathered bases at the return of the second bay. Additionally, decorative rainwater heads are present. The rear of the houses is similar in design to the front.
