Description

Nos. 61 to 69 Bolton Road, including No. 69 Corniche Road, are a group of six houses built in 1898 by William Owen. They feature a pebbledash exterior with a brick base and dressings, and have tiled roofs. The buildings are two storeys tall and consist of six bays. The first three bays are recessed by one bay and have gables on the fronts and returns, while the end three bays have a hipped roof.

The brick base extends to sill level and there is a drip mould over the ground floor. The gables are brick-coped and decorated with diapering, and the corners of the buildings have brick quoins. The windows are surrounded by brick and have ovolo-chamfered brick mullions, with leaded glazing. The ground floor windows consist of three lights, while the returns have two-light windows. The first floor features cornices above the mullioned windows, with a four-light window in the second bay and a five-light window in the third bay. The first, fourth, fifth, and sixth bays have four-light timber canted oriel windows, with those in the fourth to sixth bays having cornices that project above the eaves.

The entrances are covered by tented lead canopies supported on scrolly brackets. The buildings have a cross-axial stack, a return lateral stack with diagonal flues in the fourth bay, and gable-end stacks in the second and third bays. The first bay has a rear stack, and the rear of the buildings is similar in design, with tiled gables and privies.
