Description

No. 56 Hamilton House is a commercial building located on Hamilton Street in Birkenhead, dated 1907. It features a brick construction with a rusticated stone basement storey and stone dressings, topped with a Welsh slate roof. The building is designed in a free classical style and stands three storeys tall.

It has an asymmetrical but regular four-window layout, with the entrance positioned to the right. The main entrance consists of a round-arched door set within a pedimented case, supported by Doric columns on high bases. To the left of the entrance, there are three segmentally-arched windows that display stressed voussoirs and key blocks. There is also a narrow side doorway to the right of the principal entrance, which has a date inscribed in a shield above it.

A cornice runs above the ground floor, and the first-floor sash windows are framed with stone architraves featuring six panes in the upper lights. The upper windows have shallow segmental mouldings on their architraves. The building is finished with brackets supporting a modillion eaves cornice and has coped gables with banded end wall stacks.
