Description
10 Clifton Road and 72 The Woodlands are a pair of houses built in 1846 by Walter Scott. They feature an ashlar façade with a Welsh slate and concrete tiled roof, designed in a picturesque gothic style with an asymmetrical layout.
No. 72 The Woodlands is two stories high, consisting of a main range with two units and a central door, along with a projecting gabled block to the left. It has a four-centred arched doorway with a stepped hood mould, flanked by mullioned windows with three lights on one side and two lights on the other, both featuring hood moulds over the ground floor windows. Above the door is a trefoiled window, and the gable is crow-stepped and corbelled out. The smaller square block to the left has two-light mullioned windows with stepped hood moulds on each floor and a stack on the side of the gable.
No. 10 Clifton Road is positioned at right angles to No. 72 and features two parallel gables. It has a small central gable over a porch with a stilted arched door and a hood mould, with a similar window above and fretted bargeboards on the gable. The wide left-hand gable includes a canted bay window on the ground floor with round-arched mullioned lights. There is a single-storey castellated block to the right of the porch that abuts the rear of No. 72. To the left, a short length of wall features an ogee-arched doorway with stepped coping above, which displays the date 1846. These houses are part of the original development of Clifton Park, designed by Scott as a villa estate.
