Description
This is a pair of houses located at 57 and 59 The Woodlands, built around 1840, possibly by architect Walter Scott. The houses are faced with ashlar stone and topped with a Welsh slate roof. They are two stories tall, each featuring a two-bay plan with a side entrance. Each house has a projecting single-storey porch on either side, with round-arched doorways accessed by steps. The ground floor is rusticated and includes segmental arched 16-pane sash windows, which have stressed voussoirs and recessed panels below. Above, there are 9-pane sash windows set in stressed architraves, with entablatures supported by brackets. A continuous sill band runs along the building, and there is a moulded eaves cornice with overhanging eaves and axial stacks. These houses are part of the original development of Clifton Park, which was laid out by Scott in the early 1840s.
