Description

These are a pair of houses located on Clifton Road, Birkenhead, built around 1843 by Walter Scott as part of the original development of Clifton Park, a villa estate designed by him. The houses are constructed of stucco, with some areas now rough cast rendered, and have a Welsh slate roof. They are symmetrically planned, each house having two units and a double-depth layout, with side entrances. The outer, gabled bays project forward, featuring pilasters with low relief decoration. The ground floor has canted bay windows, with parapets decorated with carved griffins. Upper floor windows have been replaced but retain the original stressed round arched architraves. At No. 30, the stressed architraves have been removed from the upper windows. Paired doors with fanlights are set within moulded architraves on the return elevations, at the advanced gables. The upper floor features paired round-headed windows in original openings, with mask keyblocks, lion corbels and swags. Solid balconies are supported by corbels with low relief panels. The chimneys are axial and on the side walls.
