Description
This is a house located at 42 Clifton Road, built around 1840 to 1850 by Walter Scott. It features an ashlar façade and a Welsh slate roof. The house is single-storeyed but has a full basement at the rear due to the sloping site, and it is designed in a gothic style.
The elevation facing Hollybank Road includes an advanced gabled wing on the left, which has a traceried window in the Perpendicular style with an ogival hoodmould, as well as a quatrefoil lancet on the inner face. The gable bargeboards are decorated with quatrefoil panels. To the right, there is a stressed gable above the doorway, which features paired panelled arched doors accessed by steps, flanked by octagonal piers and topped with a fretted stone parapet.
On the elevation facing Clifton Street, there is a gable to the left that includes a shallow canted bay window with trefoiled lancets and a hipped roof. The house has axial and side wall stacks that are enriched with reeded flues, barley sugar swags, and heavy octagonal caps. This house is part of the original development of Clifton Park, which was laid out by Scott as a villa estate.
