Description
The pair of houses at 23 and 25 Clifton Road, Birkenhead, were built around 1843 by Walter Scott as part of the planned Clifton Park villa estate. They are constructed of stucco with a Welsh slate roof. The design is symmetrical, with a 4-window facade. Each house has a double-depth plan with two rooms per floor and a side entrance. Projecting flat porches are located at each end, featuring a panelled round-arched doorway with steps, topped by an entablature. Wide, projecting gables are a prominent feature. The ground floor has a canted bay window with a heavy, moulded cornice and parapet, and an upper sash window with an entablature. The inner bay, constructed of rusticated stucco, contains a four-light sash window with ornate wrought mullions and round arched lights (though the right-hand window has been replaced). A hood mould incorporating a swag motif is above this window. First-floor windows are 16-pane sashes.
