Description

The pair of houses at 31 and 33 Clifton Road date from circa 1840 to 1850 and were designed by Walter Scott as part of the original development of Clifton Park, a villa estate laid out by him. They are constructed of stucco with a concrete tiled roof. The houses are two storeys high, each with a double-depth, two-room plan contributing to the overall symmetrical design. The symmetrical facade features a four-window range, with the central bays projecting and topped by a pediment, and recessed side wings gabled at the end elevation. Lean-to porches have been added to the rear range on each side. The central, pedimented block contains two two-pane sash windows, while a single two-pane sash window is found in each narrow bay. Characteristic features include a heavy pediment and cornice with an acanthus frieze.
