Description

A pair of houses dating from the 1840s to 1850s, likely designed by Walter Scott. The houses are constructed with ashlar facing and have a Welsh slate roof. They are two storeys high with a basement, each house having a two-unit plan and a central entrance. The front elevation is symmetrical with a six-window range. The ground floor is in rusticated ashlar. Doorways are raised and accessed by steps, featuring cast iron spearhead railings. The doors are deep-fielded, eight-panelled, with rectangular overlights set in stressed architraves with an entablature. Flanking the doors are tripartite sash windows with decorative cast iron colonettes, with horizontal divisions to the panes. A rosette frieze runs above the ground-floor windows. The first floor has twelve-pane sashes, set in architraves with stressed entablatures, and recessed panelled aprons beneath all windows. An enriched cornice with modillions runs along the eaves. The building has gable and axial stacks. A low stone wall runs along the front of the properties, with gate piers marking the boundary.
