Description

Beechcroft is a building originally constructed around 1850, likely designed by Walter Scott. It was initially a pair of houses and has since served various purposes, including a Chamber of Commerce, offices, and an Islamic cultural centre and mosque. The building is made of coursed and squared stone with a Welsh slate roof and is designed in the Italianate style, featuring two storeys and a symmetrical layout.

The elevation facing Hollybank Road showcases advanced outer pedimented gables with squared bays on the ground floor, each containing three round-arched lights topped with a fretted parapet over a cornice. The first floor has triple round-arched windows, while the central two-window range features full-height round-arched windows on the ground floor and two-light casements above, complete with stone balconies. There are entrance porches that project from either side, each with a single-storey design, fretted parapets over cornices, and round-arched doorways.

On the Whetstone Lane elevation, the building has four bays with paired central pedimented gables, each featuring triple round-headed windows on both the ground and first floors. The ground floor windows are adorned with vermiculated voussoirs and keystones, while the first floor windows have stressed architraves. Each gable apex has a single round-arched window with a cast-iron balcony supported by stone brackets. The flanking blocks face southeast and northwest, featuring outer pedimented gables and canted bay windows on the ground floor. The building has axial stacks with stressed quoins and is part of the Clifton Park estate, which was laid out by Walter Scott in the 1840s.
