Description
No 44 Clifton Road is a pair of houses built around 1840, possibly designed by Walter Scott. The houses are constructed of stucco and topped with a Welsh slate roof. They are two storeys high and feature a symmetrical arrangement with four windows and side entrances. Each house has a central door with an overlight set in a moulded architrave, accessed by steps, and flanked by tripartite windows divided by plain pilasters. The elevation facing Whetstone Lane is divided into three bays (1-2-1) by full-height pilasters. The houses have twelve-pane sash windows, with an architrave and stressed entablature on the ground floor windows of the lower left-hand unit. The pilasters support a deep entablature beneath the overhanging eaves. These houses are part of the original Clifton Park development, which was laid out by Scott in the 1840s.
