Description
This is a pair of houses, now used for institutional purposes, built around 1843 by Walter Scott. The buildings are constructed of ashlar stone and feature a Welsh slate roof. They are two storeys high with a basement, taking advantage of the sloping site. The north elevation has five bays, with six-pane sash windows that include margin lights on the first floor. There is a projecting fretted stone balcony supported by square columns, which divides the two tripartite sash bay windows on the ground floor. The ground floor balcony is decorated with cast-iron acanthus motifs. A secondary door with a plain architrave is located on the side elevation. The roof has a heavy overhang supported by moulded wood brackets. The main entrance is centrally located in the three-bay upper elevation, featuring a Doric porch with paired shafts and a balustraded parapet. This is flanked by segmentally arched tripartite sash windows with ornate cast-iron colonettes, stressed quoins, and voussoirs. The buildings have end wall stacks. Clifton Park was developed as a planned villa estate.
