Description
Fir Tree House is a farmhouse dating from 1704, as indicated by the datestone inscribed "IHE/1704". The building is constructed of dressed stone and features a slate roof. It is two storeys high with four bays. The base is dropped at the entrance, where the chamfer continues around the building, and there are two decorative bands and quoins. The windows have hollow-chamfered surrounds and feature 20th-century paired sashes. The entrance has a moulded surround and a 20th-century door.
Between the central first-floor windows, the datestone is framed with an architrave and cable moulding. A stack is located in the roof slope, and the windows on the returns have dripstones. The rear of the house has recessed-chamfered-mullioned windows, including a five-light window on the ground floor and two-light and four-light windows on the first floor, along with a lean-to porch.
Inside, the farmhouse has chamfered beams with stepped stops and back-to-back stone fireplaces. One fireplace features a recessed Tudor-arched head, while the other has a corbelled lintel. On the first floor, one fireplace has a simple chamfered Tudor-headed opening, and the other has an ovolo-moulded opening with a recessed Tudor head. Some walls are timber framed with laths for wattle-and-daub. The staircase includes a moulded handrail, square newels, and 20th-century balusters.
