Description
West Dene is a villa, now serving as a children's home, built around 1870. The building has been altered and enlarged over time. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with sandstone dressings and features a hipped slate roof, showcasing an Italianate style. The plan of the villa is irregular.
The exterior consists of two storeys above a cellar and has three unequal bays. It features a chamfered stone plinth and a slate canopy over the ground floor, supported by slender curved wooden brackets. There is a first-floor sill band and prominent bracketed eaves. The openings are all round-headed, with most having brick-pilastered surrounds that include stone imposts and vermiculated keystones.
The central bay has a wide doorway, accessed by steps, with a painted stone surround. It includes panelled and glazed double doors with margin panes and a fanlight with radiating glazing bars. On the first floor, there is one 1/1 sash window. The left bay is canted to full height and features three 1/1 sashes on both floors. The right bay has a rectangular bay window at the ground floor with three 1/1 sashes, and three similar sashes above.
The villa forms a group with No. 41 to the left, which is of the same design in reflected reversal, and with No. 37 and No. 45 nearby.
