Description

Thorntree Cottage is a house dating probably from the early to mid 18th century, with later alterations and a rear extension. It is built with white painted roughcast render, likely over brick, and has a roof of graduated purple slate. The building follows a one-bay lobby-entry plan, extended to a double-depth form with a rear outshut under a catslide roof, and a 20th-century flat-roofed extension to the rear of this.

The exterior presents a two-storey, single-window front. A square-headed doorway, protected by an old wooden canopy on brackets, is located at the right-hand end, in line with the chimney. There is a three-light, small-paned sliding sash window on each floor to the left; the ground floor window has a segmental head, and the upper window sits directly under the eaves. A single-flue gable chimney is situated to the right. The right-hand gable wall features two 20th-century windows at ground floor and another in the gable. The left gable wall is linked to the adjacent building at No. 39.

The interior, which has not been inspected, is reported to contain purlins made from ship's mast wood split down the centre.
