Description

Rest Haven is a villa, dating to around 1870, and later altered and enlarged. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with sandstone dressings and a hipped slate roof, and is in an Italianate style with an irregular plan.

The exterior has two storeys over a cellar, with a 1:3 bay arrangement, the first bay being a later addition. A rectangular turret sits over the third bay. Features include a chamfered stone plinth, a swept lead-clad canopy over the ground floor supported by slender curved wooden brackets, a first-floor sill band, and prominent bracketed eaves that continue around the canted third bay to form a balcony in front of the turret. All openings are round-headed, with brick-pilastered surrounds featuring stone imposts and vermiculated keystones. The central doorway has steps leading up to it, with 20th-century glazed double doors and an altered fanlight. The first floor has a single 1/1 sash window. The left-hand bay has a rectangular bay window at ground floor with three 1/1 sashes, and three similar sashes above. The right-hand bay is canted to full height, with three 1/1 sashes on both the ground and first floors. The turret above has a mansard roof with finials, and a single-light casement window with a wooden balustraded balcony that has its own hipped roof, also with a finial. A canted bay of two slightly lower storeys, in matching style, is attached to the left end of the front.

The interior was not inspected during the listing process.

Rest Haven forms a group with No.39 to the right, which is of a similar design but in reversed orientation, and with Nos.37 and 45.
