Description

The conservatory, likely built in the mid to late 19th century, was originally located at Brunswick Villa on Lord Street before being purchased by the Corporation and moved to Hesketh Park in 1878, with slight alterations made. It features a cast-iron and glass structure set on a brick plinth with sandstone coping. The building has a rectangular plan resembling a nave with aisles that run at right angles to the main axis, topped by a three-span roof.

On the exterior, the conservatory is a single storey with a facade that includes three unequal gabled bays, with the central bay being much wider and higher than the outer ones. The design is symmetrical, with a coped plinth approximately 1 meter high, cast-iron columns, and glazed walls and roof. A single-pitched glazed canopy surrounds the structure, supported by large open-work brackets. The glazing on the walls features a band of square panes at the base, topped by two tiers of tall panes. The former central doorway has been replaced in a matching style. The canopy has a moulded gutter with acroteria and scrolled cresting at the center. Above the canopy, the central section includes a clerestory with oblong tilting casements, and all three gables have radiating glazing bars that create petal-shaped panes. Each of the three roofs is finished with apex and ridge cresting.

The end walls are similar to the front, with a doorway on the left end. The rear wall mirrors the front but has its glazing painted white and lacks a canopy. The interior has not been inspected.
