Description
The conservatory located immediately north-north-east of Baydon Manor dates from the late 19th century. It features a red brick base with a timber-glazed upper section and a hipped roof that has been reclad with corrugated asbestos sheets. The structure is supported by cast-iron trusses and includes a brick lateral stack on the front.
This long rectangular building has its entrance at the south end, accessed through a covered corridor. The west front consists of seven bays, with a prominent brick bay at the center that features a brick stack. The north and south ends each have four bays, with the south end containing the entrance porch and covered corridor. The tall brick plinth supports the glazed upper section, where each bay has a pair of lights and an overlight with glazing bars. The hipped roof is distinguished by a raised ridge that includes clerestory lights and small finials at each end.
At the rear, the east wall is constructed of brick and has ancillary buildings attached. The covered corridor at the south end mirrors the glazed construction of the main building, resting on a brick plinth and featuring a lean-to roof against a brick rear wall. Each end of the west front has a gabled porch with a glazed door featuring an elliptical arch, while the south end has half-glazed double doors. The rear wall includes a half-glazed door with an overlight and an oculus to the right.
Inside, the conservatory boasts a 17-bay roof supported by cast-iron trusses with ornate openwork spandrels. It features a moulded dentilled cornice and a wide three-bay alcove on the rear (east) wall, which is supported by fluted cast-iron posts. Additionally, there is a fireplace on the west front within a wide inglenook, adorned with small ball pendants.
