Description

The house at No.9 Horsfield, Southport, dates to 1928 and was designed by G Henderson for his own occupation. It is built in an Arts-and-Crafts style with white painted roughcast walls on a brick base and a very steeply pitched green slate roof. The building has a rectangular plan with a small front outshut.

The exterior features a slightly off-centre square-headed doorway with a sandstone architrave resembling a 17th-century vernacular design, incorporating raised lettering: "GH / 19 - GM - 28". Flanking the doorway are single-light casement windows, and to the right, an 18th-century rainwater head with lettering and a date is visible. Dormers with hipped roofs are set into the roof, slightly offset to the left. All windows have pegged oak frames with unusual projecting external hinges and leaded glazing. The left gable wall contains a first-floor window with Art Nouveau leaded glazing. A rear facade presents a three-window arrangement with three-light casements on both floors; the upper windows are dormers with hipped roofs, except for a rectangular recessed area with French windows on the ground floor's left end.

Internally, the original features and fittings, designed by the architect, remain largely intact. These include internal strap-hinges to the front door (with acorn-motif terminals), white painted rough plastered walls, plain oak doorcases and doors with bronze furniture, a staircase with a carved open-work balustrade, fireplaces with original tiled and wooden surrounds, and a sitting room ceiling featuring moulded plaster motifs, including thistles and fleur-de-lys. Built-in cupboards and an original toilet with fittings are also present.
