Description
The Former Christ Church School is a school building constructed in 1842 for the National Society. It has been enlarged and altered since its original construction. The building is made of common brick laid in Flemish bond, with red sandstone dressings and a slate roof. It has an F-plan layout, featuring a main range that runs parallel to the street, with projecting wings offset to the left of center and at the right end, along with a short set-back wing at the left end.
The exterior is single-storey and has a window arrangement of 2:1:1:3, with rusticated quoins. The gable end of the left wing features a triple-window design, consisting of a central cross-window flanked by narrow blind windows, all adorned with stone architraves linked by hoodmoulds. Above this is a stone tablet with raised lettering that reads "CHRIST CHURCH / NATIONAL SCHOOL / 1842," with the date figures supported by corbel feet. The right-hand wing has stepped cross-windows, although the lower part is obscured by a short flat-roofed extension that matches the original style. The main range includes two cross-windows to the left and one in the center, all with similar architraves, and there is a 20th-century doorway located at the angle with the right wing.
The interior has not been inspected. This building is notable as it appears to be the oldest public school in Crosby, aside from the Merchant Taylors Free Grammar School, which is now part of Merchant Taylors Girls' School on Liverpool Road.
