GV II

War memorial, commemorates First World War casualties. Early 1920s, by Doyle Jones, sculptor. Sandstone ashlar with bronze statue. Square pier approx. 4 metres high, with a moulded plinth, side-pilasters and a moulded cornice with swept pedestal bearing a globe on which stands a bronze statue of an angel displaying a wreath. Lettering on all sides of the pier, the north-east front with the dedication "OUR / GLORIOUS DEAD / WHO FELL / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914 - 1919 / THEIR NAME LIVETH / FOR EVERMORE", and the others with over 400 names (no units or ranks). Name of sculptor on rear corner of base. Forms a group with 3 lamp standards surrounding it (qv).
