Description
The war memorial in Crosby commemorates the casualties of the First World War. It was created in the early 1920s by the sculptor Doyle Jones. The memorial is made of sandstone ashlar and features a bronze statue. It consists of a square pier approximately 4 metres high, which has a moulded plinth, side pilasters, and a moulded cornice. At the top, there is a swept pedestal that supports a globe, on which stands a bronze statue of an angel holding a wreath.
The pier has lettering on all sides, with the north-east front dedicated to "OUR / GLORIOUS DEAD / WHO FELL / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914 - 1919 / THEIR NAME LIVETH / FOR EVERMORE." The other sides list over 400 names, without including units or ranks. The name of the sculptor is inscribed on the rear corner of the base. The memorial is surrounded by three lamp standards, forming a group with the monument.
