Description

The Royal Hotel, formerly known as the Waterloo Hotel, is a hotel located on Bath Street in Crosby. It was built in 1815 and has undergone alterations since its construction. The building features a pebbledashed render with sandstone dressings and a slate roof. It has a large double-pile plan with a rear wing, designed with an architectural front facing the marine promenade and an entrance located in the rear wing.

The exterior of the hotel is three storeys high and has a symmetrical arrangement of windows, with three windows in each section and the centre slightly set back. The ground floor is protected by a part-glazed verandah and features tall openings, most of which have altered glazing. The first floor has a painted quoins sill-band, a plain frieze, a moulded cornice, and a low parapet. The centre of the parapet is lettered "ROYAL HOTEL" and is topped with a Royal Crest featuring lion and unicorn supporters. The upper floors have sashed windows without glazing bars, with square windows on the second floor, all adorned with moulded architraves.

On the right-hand return, there is a 1:3:1 window arrangement with a projecting gabled centre. The ground floor has mostly tall 12-pane sashes, the first floor has 9-pane sashes, and the second floor features square 6-pane sashes, along with some blind windows. The gable has a pedimented gable with the lettering "THE ROYAL" and includes an iron fire escape to the front portion. The gable wall of the rear wing has a tall corniced doorway in the centre, which is topped with an early 20th-century suspended iron and glass canopy, along with one window to the right and three windows on each floor above.

The interior of the hotel has not been inspected. The Royal Hotel forms part of a group with Nos 26 and 28 and is included in the group of listed buildings on Bath Street, which, along with those in Adelaide Terrace, Beach Lawn, Marine Crescent, and Marine Terrace, contribute to the character of the Waterloo Conservation Area in Crosby.
