Description
Nos. 6, 7, and 8 Marine Terrace are a row of three houses that are part of a terraced row, built in two phases, likely between 1847 and 1850, and have been altered over time. The houses are finished in painted stucco with a slate roof and stuccoed chimneys. They feature a continuous attached verandah made of cast iron with a felted roof. Each house has a double-depth plan and is single-fronted, with Nos. 7 and 8 designed as a pair with adjoining halls and back extensions.
The exterior consists of two storeys plus attics, with three windows in each house, the center window in each case being blind. There is a prominent moulded gutter cornice supported by ornamental brackets at No. 6. No. 6 has a wide doorway to the left with side windows and a large four-pane overlight. It also features two tall multi-paned French windows on the ground floor, two sash windows on the first floor with horizontal glazing bars and built-in sun canopies, and a shallow attic storey with two five-light casement windows, where the three center lights are canted, topped by a dentilled cornice.
Nos. 7 and 8 have wide doorways with pilastered doorcases and shallow overlights with margin panes. Each of these houses has two sash windows on each floor without glazing bars, with the ground floor windows now flanked by louvred pseudo-shutters, and small skylights. The chimneys on the front slope are corniced. The verandah spans all three houses and features three unequal bays for each, supported by standards with scrolled open-work and small scrolled brackets.
The interiors have not been inspected. These houses form a group with Nos. 2 to 5 on the left and Nos. 9 to 12 on the right. All the listed buildings in Marine Terrace, along with those in Adelaide Terrace, Bath Street, Beach Lawn, and Marine Crescent, contribute to a group within the Waterloo Conservation Area of Crosby.
