Description
Grimshaw Street School is a school building dated 1836 and 1845, with an addition from 1882. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring sandstone dressings and a slate roof. The building has a rectangular plan oriented on a north-south axis, with a short addition at the north end and a projecting crosswing at the south end from 1882. The main range is two storeys high with a window arrangement of 4:1:3 (originally 3:1:3, symmetrical, but extended by one window to the left in 1845). The centre of the building slightly projects forward and includes a stone plinth, a first-floor sill-band, a plain frieze, and a moulded cornice.
Tall windows on both floors feature raised sills and wedge lintels, including coupled windows in the centre, all with altered glazing. At the right-hand end, there is a round-headed doorway with a double roll-moulded surround, imposts, and a fanlight, resembling working-class domestic doorways from the early 19th century, beneath a stone plaque inscribed "BOYS." The centre of the building has a stone plaque at the first floor inscribed "ERECTED / 1836 / ENLARGED / 1845," and a long upstand on the cornice with raised lettering that reads "GRIMSHAW ST SCHOOL." The roof features a chimney at the right-hand gable and a hip over the extension at the left end.
The north gable wall has a short set-back link to the church, forming an angle with elliptical-headed doorways linked at right angles, featuring Tuscan pilastered doorcases that match middle-class domestic doorways of the period. Above these doorways, there is a stone plaque inscribed "GIRLS." The added south wing is a single-storey structure with five bays, buttresses, and coupled cusped arched windows.
Inside, the ground floor has three lateral beams, each with an iron rod beneath that traps a small wheel at each end, although their function is not known. There is a longitudinal corridor leading to the rear, and the added wing serves as a hall with an arch-braced roof. The school forms a group with the associated United Reformed Church.
