Description

The Former Unitarian Chapel, built in 1717 and later enlarged and altered in the 19th century, is now derelict. It is constructed of red brick in English garden wall bond, mostly covered with scored render, and features a slate roof. The building has an L-plan layout, set back from the street, with the main range positioned at right angles to the street. This main section includes an apse at the south end and a short wing attached at the north end of the west side.

The single-storey main range has three rectangular windows beneath round-headed arches, which are linked by a thin impost band that is slightly raised and interrupted in each arch. The center and right-hand arches contain lunettes, while the left arch is blind or blocked. The roof has small skylights and a ventilator on the ridge. The south end features a five-sided apse with round-headed windows. The east side, which is not rendered, has three segmental-headed windows with lunettes above the first two, and near the north end, there is a small chimney that breaks the eaves.

The short wing on the west side has two low storeys and includes a doorway near the angle, framed by a doorcase of engaged Tuscan columns with an entablature and cornice. Above this doorway is a blocked window, with one smaller window on each floor to the left, and the roof is covered with graduated slates. Adjacent to the west is a large two-storey red brick range from the late 19th or early 20th century, which has five windows with altered glazing.

Historically, this chapel was the first Nonconformist chapel built in Preston, originally known as the Presbyterian chapel, and it is now recognized as the oldest place of worship in the town.
