Description
The Prison Annexe, formerly known as the governor's house, is a building dating from 1834, likely designed by John Dewhurst. It is constructed from large rock-faced sandstone blocks and features a slate roof. The structure is in the Castellated Gothic style, consisting of a central block flanked by side wings. The three-storey entrance block has three windows and is accentuated by octagonal corner turrets, a heavy roll cornice that mimics machicolation, and an embattled parapet with a shield on the central upstand. The square, embattled porch has a panelled door, while the windows include transomed one-light windows in the centre and cross-windows on each side, all with deep chamfered reveals. To the left, there is a small single-storey wing with a chamfered corner and one 2-light window. To the right, a two-storey wing features a central archway that now contains a window. Although both wings have been altered, they maintain a similar style with embattled parapets. The building forms a group with the adjacent prison and the Old Sessions House.
