Description

The Old Dog Inn is a public house, likely built in the early 19th century and altered in 1898. It is constructed of brick, with the front featuring rusticated ashlar at the ground floor and stucco above, all painted. The building has a double-depth plan and includes a through wagon entry at the left end. It stands three storeys high, probably over cellars, and has four bays. The ground floor is designed in a rustic style, while the upper floors, except for the first bay, present a symmetrical three-bay classical composition with giant pilasters, a moulded cornice, and a central pediment that contains a medallion.

On the ground floor, there is a round-headed doorway in the third bay, which is topped by an elaborate segmental-pedimented canopy. This pediment features monogrammed lettering that reads "18 MB & Co Ltd 98," likely referring to the Massey Burnley brewery. To the right of the doorway are two sashed windows, and to the left is a wide elliptical-arched window with a keyed moulded architrave. The left end has an elliptical-arched wagon entry with a similar keyed moulded head and imposts, with the right impost extending as a cornice over a doorway at the canted corner of the entry, which is adorned with decorated wrought-iron gates.

The upper floors have sashed windows with moulded architraves. The windows in the third bay are coupled and feature a frieze above the first floor that is lettered "THE OLD DOG INN." The windows in the flanking bays on the first floor have cornices. At the rear, the building has scored render, narrow sashed windows with raised sills and wedge lintels, and a sashed stair-window with margin panes. The interior has been altered.
