Description
No. 11 Church Street, along with Nos. 2 and 4 Lancaster Road, is a pair of shops with dwellings above, built around 1850-1860 and altered over time. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with sandstone dressings, and has a concealed roof that is likely slate. It is situated on a corner site with a rectangular plan. The structure is mostly three storeys tall, except for Nos. 2 and 4 Lancaster Road, which rise to four storeys.
The facade facing Church Street is symmetrical with three windows and features a moulded cornice and a parapet that wraps around the building. The ground floor has a 19th-century shop front that extends around the corner, complete with a deep fascia and simple railings, topped with scrolled wrought-iron cresting. Above this, there is a deep band. The first floor has tall 15-pane sash windows, with the central window framed by a moulded architrave and cornice. The second floor has shorter sash windows with glazing bars only in the upper panes. The roof is hipped.
On the Lancaster Road side, there are two similar windows on each floor, all with flat-arched heads. Nos. 2 and 4 Lancaster Road feature 20th-century shops at ground level, with three sash windows on the first and second floors and two smaller sash windows on the third floor, all also with flat-arched heads. The interiors have not been inspected. This building forms a group with the Red Lion and Ellesmere Chambers.
