Description

No. 143 Church Street is a shop and dwelling, now used as a shop and offices, likely built in the early 19th century and altered over time. The building is constructed of red brick, which is now entirely rendered, with sandstone dressings and a slate roof. It has a double-depth plan that includes a tunnel entry to Bolton's Court. The structure stands four storeys high and features three windows. The ground floor has an altered and concealed former frieze and cornice, with a plain frieze and moulded gutter cornice. There is a rectangular entry on the left side and modern shops on the right. The first and second floors have tall sash windows without glazing bars, raised sills, and wedge lintels, while the third floor has square six-pane sashes with raised sills. A tall gable chimney is located on the right side. The rear of the building has been altered, and there is a modern rear wing that is not of special interest. The interior has also been altered. Historically, this building was significant as the location where the Tory weekly newspaper "The Preston Pilot" was printed and published by Lawrence Clarke, a bookseller and printer, starting in 1825. It forms a group with the Bull and Royal Hotel, to which it is attached.
