Description

Miller Arcade is a shopping arcade with offices above, dated 1899 above the south entry. It has been altered and restored. The building is a large rectangular block situated on an island site, featuring cruciform arcades. Constructed from red brick with intricate buff terracotta dressings, it has composition tile roofs and glazed vaulting in the arcades. The design is eclectic, incorporating some Moorish elements. The structure consists of three storeys above cellars, plus an attic storey on the south front and turrets above the north and south entries. It has cornices at the ground and second floors, along with brick parapets.

The ground floor features a continuous arcade with alternating wide and narrow openings that have rounded corners. In the center of each side, there are two-storey shouldered entries with convex corners, which project slightly and rise to turrets. These entries have deeply recessed doorways with windows above, while the east and west sides have wider openings with a massive moulded corbel supporting a second-floor oriel. The south front includes canted two-storey oriels with elaborate moulded terracotta dressings and panels, as well as arcades of round-headed windows in the attic. The other facades display coupled windows with similarly decorated two-storey surrounds. Notably, the north portion of the east side features an enriched doorway beneath a lintel with raised lettering that reads "TURKISH BATHS." The rounded corners have curved two-light windows, with corbelled balconies on the first floor.

Inside, the arcades retain mostly original shop fronts with slender turned shafts and overlights featuring colored glass. The upper floors have elaborately decorated windows, including groups of three and four oval oculi above the entries, complete with canopies.
