Description
The gate piers and gates to the churchyard opposite the east end of the Church of St John were built around 1855, likely by E.H. Shellard. They are constructed from sandstone ashlar and cast iron in a Gothic style. The pair of octagonal piers are approximately half a metre wide and about 4 metres high. Each pier features a plain base, a tall shaft with trefoil-headed panels on all sides, a cornice above, a collar adorned with quatrefoil panels, and a prominent moulded cornice topped with an embattled cap. The gates, accessed by three steps, consist of vertical bars that create two tiers of arcading, with bands of quatrefoils between them and near the bottom, along with trefoil cresting.
