Description
131A Church Street is a warehouse that has been converted into a shop. It likely dates from the early 19th century and has undergone alterations. The building is constructed of brick in Flemish bond with sandstone dressings, and the front is painted white. It features a rectangular plan that runs at right angles to the street, with a basement and four storeys.
The facade is gabled and symmetrical, with three windows. There is a central loading slot that has three stages above the ground floor. The first two stages have fixed windows, while the top stage includes a loading door with a small hoist above it. At ground level, there is a doorway with glazed double doors. The ground floor showcases 19th-century shop windows that are framed by pilaster architraves and large foliated consoles at the ends of the fascia boards. The upper floors have square windows flanking the loading slot, featuring raised sills, rectangular lintels, and altered glazing.
On the west side wall, there are four 4-pane windows on each floor, which have raised sills and wedge lintels, although all are blocked internally. Inside, each floor, including the cellar, contains a series of eight large beams spaced approximately two metres apart. Most of these beams are chamfered, while some are boxed or have been replaced. The top floor features three kingpost roof trusses with fishbone struts and two pairs of purlins.
