Description
Bibury Primary School, originally a National school, was built in 1845 and enlarged in 1872. It is constructed of coursed rubble limestone with ashlar chimneys and a stone slate roof. The main structure runs east-west with a rear wing to the north. The south front features the earliest part on the right, which has two windows, with mullioned and transomed windows on the ground floor and a two-light window above. There is a central doorway with a four-panel door. The tall chimneys with crenellated tops at the east end indicate the original ends of the building. To the left, three large mullioned and transomed windows were added during the enlargement. An off-centre parapet gabled ashlar porch has a Tudor arched doorway and a plank door. The rear of the building has a west-facing gable with a chimney on the rear wing and a lean-to below that has altered shouldered arched openings. A later 19th-century extension includes another chimney gable above two tall transomed casements. The interior has not been inspected. The school is part of an important group with the nearby church.
