Description

Streatham House Independent School is a pair of large semi-detached houses, built around 1870-1880 and now serving as a school. The buildings are constructed of brown brick with polychrome dressings and feature a slate roof, showcasing some Gothic architectural elements. They have a double-depth plan with cross-wings and stand two storeys tall with attics, presenting a façade of two plus two windows. The gabled outer bays project forward and are adorned with bands of yellow and blue brick, polychrome two-centred arches over the windows, and oversailing bracketed eaves and gables with pierced bargeboards.

Each gabled outer bay features a canted bay window on the ground floor, topped with crocketed sandstone capitals and a hipped roof with bracketed eaves. The first floor has a tripartite window with columnar mullions that have crocketed caps, and a geometrically-tiled tympanum beneath a two-centred arch with red and yellow voussoirs. An attic window in a similar style completes the design. The inner bays also have tripartite windows on the ground floor with columnar mullions and triple-arched heads, while the first floor features two-light windows styled like those of the outer bays, along with a gabled half-dormer that has ornamental barge-boards. Most windows retain their original sashes without glazing bars. The buildings have ridge chimneys and stepped side walls, with single-storey porches located in the angle. The rear and interior have not been inspected. This school is a good example of its type and date.
