SJ39NW VICTORIA ROAD WEST 778-1/3/126 (South side) Nos.2 AND 4 Streatham House Independent School
II
Pair of large semi-detached houses, now school. c1870-80; altered. Brown brick with polychrome dressings, slate roof. Some Gothic features. Double-depth plan with cross-wings. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attics, 2+2 windows, with gabled outer bays breaking forwards; bands of yellow and blue brick, polychrome 2-centred arches over windows, oversailing bracketed eaves and gables with pierced bargeboards. The gabled outer bay of each has a canted bay window at ground floor, with crocketed sandstone capitals and a hipped roof with bracketed eaves; a tripartite window at 1st floor with columnar mullions which have crocketed caps, and a geometrically-tiled tympanum under a 2-centred arch with red and yellow voussoirs; and a 1-light attic window in similar style. The inner bays have tripartite windows at ground floor with similar columnar mullions and triple-arched heads, 2-light windows at 1st floor in similar style to those of the outer bays, and a gabled half-dormer with ornamental barge-boards. Most windows retain original sashes without glazing bars. Ridge chimneys. Stepped side walls, with single-storey porches in the angle. Rear and interior not inspected. Good example of type and date.
