Description

Great Crosby and Blundellsands War Memorial is situated in the Garden of Remembrance in Alexandra Park, on Coronation Road. The memorial, approximately 5 meters tall, consists of a broad, corniced obelisk raised on a base and topped with a basin and an electric lamp. It is accessed by flagstone paths bordered with brick, featuring short flights of three steps at the front, rear, and sides.

At the top of the obelisk, the lamp is supported by a stilted basin. An inscription around the foot-ring of the basin reads "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVER MORE." The ornamented feet of the four stilts rest on a two-stage capstone, with the lower stage decorated with centrally-placed palmettes.

A carved Greek key band is positioned facing the cornice, and the obelisk, which is square in plan, features rosettes at each corner of each face. The main dedicatory inscription on the front face of the obelisk, rendered in leaded letters, states "TO THE MEMORY/ OF/ OUR/ GLORIOUS/ DEAD/ PRO PATRIA 1914 – 1918." Names of the commemorated individuals are listed on the other three faces. The front face of the square base is adorned with fasces and a shield, carved in low relief, and includes the inscription "AND THOSE WHO FOLLOWED/ 1939 – 1945" below it. The base is set on a polygonal step.
