Description
The Carnegie Library, built in 1904, is located on College Road in Crosby. This library is constructed from Accrington brick with sandstone dressings and features green slate roofs with red ridge tiles, as well as a stone turret topped with a copper cap. It is designed in the Edwardian Baroque style and has a square plan that includes a nave with side aisles beneath a three-span roof, along with a front range that has a hipped roof parallel to the road.
The exterior is a single-storey building with a turret and consists of three bays. The central entrance bay is flanked by a gabled bay on the left and a balustraded bay on the right. The entrance projects slightly and overlaps the flanking bays, featuring sandstone ashlar above the sill level, pilasters, a plain frieze, a modillioned cornice, a balustraded parapet, and a central dome. The entrance has a segmentally-bowed centre with set-in Ionic columns that form a porch for a recessed doorway, which is flanked by pairs of small one-light windows. The outer bays contain large mullioned three-light windows with glazing bars and mutules; the left bay has a stepped and shaped gable with a segmental-pedimented aedicule at the top, while the right bay features a balustraded parapet.
Behind the entrance bay, offset to the left, is a two-stage turret. The lower stage is square and made of brick, while the upper stage is octagonal and constructed of stone, featuring console supports, a clock face on the front, and an arcaded top with an ogival domed roof and finial. The five-bay side walls are designed in a similar but simpler style, with paired sashed windows, and the three-bay rear has tall triple sashes. Inside, the nave and aisles create an almost single open space that extends up to the roof.
