Description

The Church of St Luke is a church built between 1853 and 1854 by architects A & G Holme. It has recently suffered severe fire damage and has been largely rebuilt at the rear and internally in a 20th-century style. The building is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble with freestone dressings and features a metal sheet roof.

Architecturally, the church is designed in a Simple Decorated style. The layout includes a wide aisleless nave with north and south transepts, a chancel, and a west steeple. The tower consists of three equal stages that are successively set back and is supported by full-height diagonal buttresses. The west doorway is large and has a 2-centred arch, moulded in three orders with a hoodmould. There is a semi-circular vice in the left angle of the tower, featuring staggered cusped spherical-triangle windows. The second stage contains a 2-centred, three-light window with tracery, and a clockface is located in the lower part of the third stage, which also has a 2-light louvred belfry window. Similar belfry windows are present on the other sides of the tower, topped with a broach spire that is swept at the foot.

The four-bay nave is supported by buttresses and has a large gabled porch on the second bay of the south side, featuring a doorway similar to that of the tower. The other bays have 2-centred arched two-light windows with tracery. The full-height two-bay transepts are designed in a similar style and include larger windows in their gable walls. There is a 20th-century metal-clad turret at the crossing, along with a 20th-century apse and similar additions to the chancel. The interior has not been inspected.
