Description
The verandah attached to the shop fronts at numbers 657-671 on Lord Street in Southport was built in 1901 by T Hodge. It is made of cast iron and glass and features a 9-bay colonnade that extends one bay beyond the building it is attached to, with a one-bay return. The structure includes cast-iron columns with splayed pedestals, plain shafts, large circular crocketed caps, enriched stilts, and scrolled foliated brackets that connect to an open-work frieze. The fifth bay of the frieze incorporates the words "TOWER BUILDINGS," and there is a moulded gutter with cresting, although part of the cresting is missing from the sixth bay. This verandah is part of a series that characterizes Lord Street and marks its northern end. Numbers 657-671 are not included in this listing.
