Description

11 and 13 Manchester Road are a pair of houses built around 1830-1840, with some alterations. They are constructed of red and yellow brick in Flemish bond, featuring sandstone dressings and a slate roof. The houses have a double-depth plan and are designed as a halls-adjoining pair, each with a single front and coupled back extensions.

The exterior consists of two storeys over a high basement and has a four-window range. Originally symmetrical, the houses have a plinth and coupled doorways that lead up six steps, sheltered by a rectangular wooden porch with two arched openings and a moulded cornice. Above the porch are two windows with raised sills and wedge lintels. There are full-height canted bays on the left and right, each with tall basement windows beneath wedge lintels.

At No.11, all the windows except the basement window have 2/2 sashes, although the lower-leaf glazing bars have been removed at the ground floor. In contrast, all the windows at No.13 have altered glazing. The gable chimney at No.13 has been rebuilt, while the chimney at No.11 has been removed. To the left of No.11, there is a single-storey screen wall that forms the facade of a small service wing.

The interior has not been inspected. This pair of houses forms a group with No.9 on the left and Nos. 15 and 17 on the right.
