Description

No. 9 Manchester Road is a villa built in 1835, which has been enlarged and altered over time. It features white painted stucco and a hipped slate roof, designed in the late Georgian style. The building has a double-depth, double-fronted plan with small side wings and a large rear wing that was likely added later.

The exterior is two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-window arrangement, with the centre section slightly projecting. It includes a plinth, a first-floor sill band, a plain frieze, and a moulded gutter cornice. The ground floor is highlighted by a rectangular porch in the centre, supported by pilasters, with a plain frieze and moulded cornice. The porch features glazed and panelled double doors, topped with an overlight consisting of four square panes with honeycomb leaded glazing.

Each side wing, which serves as single-storey service passages, has a panelled door with a three-pane overlight; the right-side door has an added attic. All windows are horned sashes without glazing bars, and there are corniced chimneys on the side walls. The rear wing contains sashed windows.

The villa is part of a group that includes former stables and a coach-house at the rear, facing Walton Street, along with No. 7 to the left and Nos. 11 and 13 to the right.
