Description
Hoghton House is a pair of houses or villa, now functioning as a single unit. It was built in the mid to late 19th century, possibly in two phases. The building is constructed of red brick with painted stone dressings and features hipped slate roofs. It has an irregular T-plan formed by a double-depth main range with slightly projected side wings and a service wing at the rear.
The exterior consists of two and three storeys and has a six-window range. The design is symmetrical, with a two-storey, four-window main range flanked by three-storey canted bays, all topped with hipped roofs. The main range features 2/2 sash windows with flat-arched gauged brick heads, which are now painted black to resemble stone wedge lintels. A square chimney stack is located at the center of the ridge.
The right-hand canted bay includes a round-headed doorway with a shell canopy, flanked by small segmental-headed sashes on the canted sides. It has a 2/2 sash window on the first floor, similar to those in the main range, and a square 2/2 sash on the second floor, both with sill bands and wedge lintels painted black. The left-hand canted bay is similar, but the former doorway has been changed to a window, and the second floor lacks a sill band. The interior has not been inspected.
