Description
Numbers 143-161 is a commercial building located on Lord Street in Southport, built between 1883 and 1884 by T Hodge. It underwent alterations in 1913 and 1961, with the verandah added in 1902 by FW Finchett. The building is constructed of red brick with sandstone dressings, most of which are painted, and features a hipped slate roof. The attached verandah is made of cast iron and glass.
The exterior consists of three storeys and a four-window range. The ground floor has altered shop fronts, while both upper floors feature sill bands and an impost band on the second floor, along with prominent bracketed eaves. The windows are arranged in groups of three; the first-floor windows are round-headed, and the second-floor windows are segmental-headed, all with keyed stone heads, with the second-floor windows being stilted.
The verandah is supported by slender cast-iron columns and has shallow unpierced brackets, a plain frieze, and cresting, although the section in front of the fourth bay currently lacks brackets and cresting. The interior has not been inspected. This building forms a group with the adjoining Numbers 163-177 and is part of the distinctive series that characterizes this street.
